POSITION SUMMARY - JOURNEYMAN LABORER
Van Diest Bros., Inc. is looking for skilled, safety-minded union laborers to join our underground wet utility crews.
Laborers assist with the installation and maintenance of storm drain, sewer, domestic and fire water, and recycled water systems on our jobsites across Southern California.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform trenching, excavation, and backfill support in accordance with jobsite safety and shoring requirements
Assist with the installation of storm drain, sewer, domestic water, fire water, and recycled water pipelines
Handle, distribute, and stage pipe, fittings, and materials for pipelayers and equipment operators
Set up and maintain traffic control, barricades, and jobsite signage per traffic control plans
Operate hand tools and power tools, including compaction equipment, saws, and grinders
Assist with shoring, trench boxes, and other excavation protective systems
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free jobsite
Follow all site-specific safety plans, OSHA excavation/trenching standards, and Van Diest Bros. safety policies
Perform other laborer duties as assigned by the foreman or superintendent
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a member in good standing with Local 1309
Prior experience on wet utility, underground, and/or heavy civil construction crews required
Strong knowledge of trenching and excavation safety practices
Ability to read and follow plans, specifications, and verbal/written jobsite instructions
Punctual, dependable, and able to work effectively as part of a crew
Valid CA Driver’s License
Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to jobsites throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly
Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined or trench spaces for extended periods
Ability to work at heights, in trenches, and around heavy equipment safely
WAGES AND BENEFITS
Wages and fringe benefits (health & welfare, pension, training, vacation/holiday) are paid per the current collective bargaining agreement and applicable union wage scale for the classification and project.
