Position Summary – superintendent
The Superintendent is responsible for field coordination and execution of wet utility construction projects. This position oversees daily field operations, manages crews and subcontractors, and ensures work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project plans and specifications. The Superintendent works closely with Project Managers and Project Engineers to drive productivity, maintain quality, and deliver successful project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Review drawings, specifications, and contracts to understand project scope, requirements, and sequencing.
Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily field operations for wet utility installation including sewer, storm drain, and water systems.
Manage field crews, foremen, subcontractors, equipment, and material deliveries to maintain efficient workflow and productivity.
Coordinate with Project Managers, Project Engineers, inspectors, surveyors, and other trades to ensure proper execution and scheduling.
Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements, including trench safety, shoring, and confined space procedures.
Verify line and grade, elevations, and layout to ensure installation meets project specifications and tolerances.
Monitor production, track installed quantities, and maintain progress in alignment with project schedules.
Identify and resolve field issues, conflicts, and delays while maintaining project momentum.
Coordinate inspections, testing, and approvals with city, county, and agency representatives.
Maintain accurate field documentation including daily reports, production logs, and as-built information.
Support cost control efforts by managing labor, equipment usage, and minimizing rework.
Take ownership of field operations and continuously improve efficiency, quality, and team performance.
Qualifications
A strong understanding of construction methods and field operations is required. The Superintendent must be a strong leader, highly organized, and capable of managing multiple crews and priorities.
5–10+ years of relevant field experience in civil construction, with a focus on underground wet utilities, is required.
Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written). Must be comfortable coordinating with internal teams, subcontractors, and inspectors.
Strong understanding of civil plans, specifications, and construction documents.
Proven ability to manage crews, schedules, and jobsite logistics effectively.
Knowledge of trenching, shoring systems, pipe installation, and dewatering methods.
Must have strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in a fast-paced field environment.
OSHA 30 certification is required.
Experience with GPS machine control (Trimble Base and Rover and Total Station equipment) and field technology is a plus.
